Ferns have a great opportunity for an experienced Health & Safety Manager (H&S) to join our growing business.
You will be responsible for leading and developing the H&S strategy and operations for Ferns Surfacing Ltd, Ferns TM ltd, Ferns Aggregates Ltd, and other associated group companies. The role includes leading the day-to-day management and maintenance of the Company Group Health & Safety Policy, Quality Systems and Environmental Policy. You will also be an active member of our Operations Board.
You will provide assurance that these policies and procedures are compliant, communicated and where relevant training is provided to support these in all areas of the Company’s activities.
The role will require regular travel across the Southeast.
Key Responsibilities and duties of the role:
- Creating and implementing H&S strategy and procedures.
- Responsible for producing and maintaining the quality of Risk Assessments and Method Statements
- Managing a small team of SHEQ Advisors and Administrators.
- Developing and monitoring the company health and safety policies and procedures
- Design and implementation of a company H&S training framework for all job roles and oversee the planning of all group training requirements
- Ensure the company environmental policy is adhered to.
- Advising on changes to working practices to ensure they are safe and compliant with current legislation
- Maintenance of the COSHH file.
- Design and Implement planned and ad hoc site inspections and audits.
- To act as the subject matter expert for any safety or environmental issues arising across our works.
- To maintain the risk assessments and method statements
- To ensure Safety and Technical Audit policy implementation and close out.
- In accordance with the H&S Strategy, Client and internal feedback, and in accordance with current legislation, manage a consistent programme of toolbox talks.
- To oversee the maintenance of accident/incident and near miss records and all necessary investigations
- Design and implementation of Health & Safety Induction training for new starters.
- To implement, manage and monitor all aspects of the Ferns Group quality system.
- To provide assurance that all personnel are suitably qualified, competent and equipped to carry out the tasks they are undertaking in a safe and controlled manner.
- To ensure the management of the Company’s Competency Procedure.
- To ensure that all procedures for procurement and management of materials are complied with.
- To ensure that all procedures for calibration of equipment are complied with.
- In conjunction with the SHEQ Director for Forefront Utilities, liaise, with other professionals, Client representatives and agencies including the Health and Safety Executive
- Keeping up to date with changes in the law.
Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Registered with Energy and Utility Skills Register (EUSR) for SHEA Gas, Water & Electric
- Hold a recognised health & safety qualification such as IOSH/NEEBOSH or equivalent
- Ideally working towards Chartered Membership of NEEBOSH
- Minimum of 2 years Safety Professional experience
- Ideally Street works (units 1-3)
- Civil Engineering or Highways experience would be an advantage
- Experience in investigating incidents
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Able to influence and persuade individuals at all levels to adhere to the H&S rules in place
- Have a good level of physical fitness and stamina in order to drive to and attend onsite meetings
- Have a logical approach and be able to solve problems
- Be well-organised and pay attention to detail
- Be able to cope under pressure
Training
Motivated to continually improve personal skills and knowledge, including attending any necessary training courses run by in-company training departments or external providers.
Safety
- To work safely at all times ensuring the safety of your colleagues and all those working around you.
- To comply with the requirements of the Ferns Surfacing Health and Safety Environmental and Quality policies and procedures.
This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, although flexibility for an earlier start time or later finish time may be required on occasions due to audits and inspections
The role will be partially office-based, but will involve travel around to visit sites on a regular basis
Travel will be required. Company Vehicle and fuel card will be provided.
Full driving licence with no more than six penalty points due to frequent travel involved.
