Introducing Steve, one of our Contract Directors. We caught up with him to find out more about his role here at Ferns and what he gets up to in his spare time. Steve also had some great things to say about the companies COO, read on to find out more.

What is your role here at Ferns?

I’m the Contracts Director for the SGN contract and Cadent, west London. Some of my responsibilities involve liaising with the client and making sure the work is completed on time. I am also responsible for making sure the work is planned correctly, that we don’t get section 74 overruns, and that our workforce are being compliant on site!

How long have you worked at Ferns?

I have been at Ferns for 5 years now, I previously worked at Forefront Utilities for 15 years!

What do you enjoy most about your role here at Ferns?

The day-to-day challenges, each day is never the same! Ferns is the best reinstatement company I have worked for so I enjoy my role in that respect.

What has been your proudest achievement at Ferns so far?

We did a job at Horseferry Road, the road is in the City of Westminster in central London. It was a very high-profile job and was the biggest groundwork hole I have ever seen. We organised the job really well and completed it successfully.

What are some of the challenges you face in your role? How do you overcome them?

Short permit durations on high-profile work. Any work we do on TFL (transport for London) roads, this type of work is always demanding. We need to make sure we are on to the job in the very first instance and have it completed in the timescale given.

What do you do in your spare time?

I do a lot of cycling and I also like gardening!

Who or what inspires you?

I like to leave work knowing I’ve done a good job, and don’t tell him but, Jon Williams inspires me because of his work ethic and practice. Although he’s the COO (Chief Operating Officer), he makes an effort to talk to everyone in the company from the yardman, right up to the directors.

Both of Steve’s kids have finished uni with 1st class degrees, and his daughter has just landed herself a graduate job, congratulations to both of them!
